Lexington, Ky. – October 28, 2022 – After two exciting days of adult amateur competition, junior riders took to the Alltech Arena for the start of their respective age group equitation divisions presented by Cindy Pérez and Anne Bennett.
Renowned Kentucky Horse Park course designer, Bobby Murphy (USA) prepared young riders with a sweeping track around the indoor arena. Two one-stride elements and long bending lines tested the horse and rider’s adjustability and consistency on course, setting them up for technical questions they might encounter during Sunday’s coveted Hamel Family Foundation 3’3” Equitation Championship.
First in the order of go in the Pérez & Bennet Under 14 Open Equitation was Ruby Calger who went on to clinch the first blue ribbon of the day aboard Donald Stewart’s Opening Bell. Faith Schuttemeyer followed the over fences awards by taking the win in the flat phase with Blackjack owned by Gabriella Salazar.
Harper Phipps stepped up to win the 14-15 Open Equitation section A over fences aboard Emily Lucibello’s C’est Blue. “I was just planning on having a smooth track around getting down the lines. My horse is usually pretty slow. So I was just focusing on getting a good pace, ” recalls Phipps. In the section A flat, Lillian Muzzy executed textbook equitation to secure her win aboard MZ Farm’s LLC’s Baldeur. Section B was topped by Londyn Samlaska on her own Edesa’s Revel and Katelyn Martin on her mount, Sensation, took the top prize in section B’s flat phase.
The final age group of the day, the 16-17 Open Equitation, welcomed Olivia Pileggi and Heather Acker’s Keynote to the winners circle to claim the top spot in the over fences section A. Juliette Earley and Nils On owned by Doris Leventhal rounded out the blue ribbon awards of the day after showcasing their riding style around the track to win section B.
Competition will resume Saturday, October 29th in the Alltech Arena with the awarding of championships in the junior equitation divisions. Starting at 7:30 AM (EST) riders in the under 14 age group will return for the second and final over fences round of the Pérez and Bennet Open Equitation.
