AREA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The National Horse Show offers Area Championship classes for both the NHS 3’3″ Equitation Championship Sponsored by the Hamel Foundation and the NHS Adult Equitation Championship Sponsored by THIS. These events are held at each of the existing Maclay Area Championships and provide riders with an additional opportunity to compete in a championship-style format within their own geographic areas.
The goal of the Area Championships is to give riders who participate in these equitation classes throughout the year—and who may also be aiming for their respective national finals—valuable experience in a higher-level competitive environment. While these classes serve as excellent preparation for the Finals at the National Horse Show in November, participation in an Area Championship is not required to qualify for the Finals.
Area Championship classes follow the same format as the Maclay Area Championships and are open to all NHS members. The Champion, Reserve Champion, and Third Place finisher from each Area Championship, if not otherwise qualified, will receive invitations to the NHS 3’3″ Equitation Championship Sponsored by the Hamel Foundation or the NHS Adult Equitation Championship Sponsored by THIS, provided they have earned points in the corresponding classes during the same competition year. The champion of the Maclay Area Championship, if not otherwise qualified, will receive an invitation to the Maclay Finals, provided they have earned points in corresponding classes during the competition year.
Riders may compete in only one Area Championship during a qualifying period. Those who are qualified for both the NHS 3’3″ Equitation Championship Sponsored by the Hamel Foundation and the ASPCA Maclay Area Championship or National Championships may compete in both the NHS 3’3″ Area Championship and the ASPCA Maclay Area Championship within the same qualifying period.
