Changes Regarding Qualifying
for the 2004 ASPCA-Maclay Regional Championships

New York City, NY - September 25, 2003 - Effective September 1, 2003, changes were instituted by USA Equestrian and the National Horse Show Association of America (NHSAA) in regard to qualifying for the 2004 ASPCA-Maclay Regional Championships.

The new qualifying requirements are as follows:
Art. 2212. Requirements for Specific Classes.   (Effective 9/1/03)  (Approved 9/11/03) 
10. ASPCA HORSEMANSHIP CLASS. … If 50 or more entries are received three hours prior to the class, the class must be divided by every other number and run as two separate classes. In order to qualify for the Regional Finals conducted by the National Horse Show, a contestant must win the following:  In CT, NJ, NY a rider must win 60 pts.; in FL, MA, PA, and RI 38 pts.; in AL, CA, DE, GA, IA, IL, MD, MN, NC, NE, ND, NV, OH, OK, SC, SD, TN, VA and WI 25 pts.; in all other states, Canada and Puerto Rico 13 pts.

Classes held after August 31, 2003 will count toward the next year's finals. Any rider who will not be eligible to compete in the next year as a junior should not compete in qualifying classes after August 31.

The prestigious American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)-Maclay National Horsemanship Championship showcases the top junior riders from the U.S. and Canada.  The Championship returns this year to New York City at the new Metropolitan National Horse Show.  The Metropolitan National Horse Show will take place from October 29 to November 2, 2003 at Pier 94 and the Showpiers on the Hudson Complex in Manhattan.  The three judges named to officiate the 2003 ASPCA-Maclay Championship at the Metropolitan National Horse Show are Hap Hansen of Encinitas, CA, Matt Collins of Culpeper, VA, and Julie Winkel of Reno, NV. 

The ASPCA-Maclay Finals have long been the proving ground for future top international stars.  Such notable equestrians as William Steinkraus, Frank Chapot, Conrad Homfeld, Leslie Howard, Peter Wylde, Ray Texel, and Nicole Shahinian-Simpson won the ASPCA-Maclay National Championship prior to going on to international equestrian success.
